Wireless LAN Solutions

Are you thinking about installing a wireless local area network (WLAN) at your airport, but are concerned about possible interference with or disruptions to existing airport operations or services?

ARINC—a leader in the development of airport networks and wireless communication systems—designs, installs, and manages airport wireless LANs. We can integrate a WLAN into your existing network, seamlessly, securely, and without interrupting other airport systems or services.

A WLAN uses radio frequency (RF) technology to provide a highly flexible data communications system as an extension to, or as an alternative for, a wired local area network (LAN). Since WLANs transmit and receive data over the air, they totally eliminate the need for users to "plug into" a wired network connection when communicating. WLANs provide user mobility, something that wired LANs simply can't do. In addition, today's WLAN technology supports broadband connectivity, allowing users to quickly send and receive large amounts of data, and offers advanced encryption to ensure confidentiality.

Not only can WLANs improve the efficiency of airport staff and support services, they can also be an exciting new source of revenue. Using WLAN technology, you can offer a variety of paying traveler services, such as wireless Internet access in public areas. ARINC has developed the standards and technology to ensure that WLAN-based public services provided by the airport operator do not interfere with wireless services offered by other commercial enterprises.

When it comes to your wireless LAN, you can trust ARINC. We have decades of experience supporting all aspects of airport communications services, including wired LANs and WANs, wireless LANs, systems integration, and shared operations and information systems.

Did You Know

When implementing wireless LANs at airports, care must be taken to avoid harmful interference between communications systems sharing the same airspace. The airspace must provide Universal Access (i.e., support all airport and airlines users, as well as wireless Internet service providers authorized to use the space). ARINC is playing a leadership role in this technology through the development of standards that would ensure the proper and fair operation of all authorized WLANs in the airport arena.
