GeoMap—Position Reporting

Knowing the accurate location of in-flight aircraft—and being able to display this information in a readily understood format that meets individual air traffic controller (ATC) needs—is critical to the safe and efficient functioning of any ATC operation. Where can you find a system that does this for automatic dependent surveillance (ADS)- and voice-only aircraft? A system that provides complete ATC flexibility, while incorporating sophisticated in-flight situational algorithms? ARINC, of course.

ARINC's GeoMap provides precise aircraft positions, allows controllers to customize their graphical display to suit their needs, and sends an alert if aircraft are projected to encroach upon each other.

GeoMap runs on the ARINC CNS/ATM workstation. It displays aircraft positions, CNS/ATM routes and adapted routes, waypoints and waypoint names, beacons, radar locations, coastlines, sectors, and area-of-interest boundaries. Controllers can configure up to five zoom regions on their situational display, and increment or go to maximum zoom with a single click. They can also select and cancel display features and customize the information appearing in aircraft data blocks.

GeoMap displays both ADS aircraft and transcribed voice aircraft position reports. It receives ADS position data via the ARINC CNS/ATM Gateway data link. GeoMap displays the positions of voice-only aircraft through its Voice Position Report Transcription application. Radio operators and controllers can use the Voice Transcription window to convert voice reports into ADS-type reports, and forward them to connected CNS/ATM workstations.

The GeoMap situation display provides controllers with a graphical view of aircraft-reported ADS positions within system-configurable areas of interest. For aircraft out of current-screen view, GeoMap sounds an audible alert when any aircraft is projected to approach another aircraft within a system-configurable distance or altitude.

GeoMap can automatically establish and cancel ADS contracts. The controller can establish periodic, event, emergency, and demand contracts for any aircraft. Controllers can also specify the type of event that generates a position report, configure the system to send an ADS contract termination message or automatically cancel a contract once the aircraft has left the airspace, cancel all contracts, or cancel specific contracts.
