ARINC to Provide Caltrain with New Rail Control and Predictive Arrival System for Passengers
February 2, 2010
Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated has been awarded a major contract to provide new rail control and passenger information systems for the 77-mile Caltrain commuter rail line, serving the San Francisco peninsula and California’s Santa Clara Valley.
The contract was awarded in December by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, the regional authority operating Caltrain.
ARINC will design and install an integrated Rail Operations Control System and Predictive Train Arrival/Departure System, based on the company’s industry-leading Advanced Information Management (AIM®) Rail Control and Customer Information software platforms. The systems will be fully integrated, providing Caltrain with a highly reliable and scalable solution for its centralized rail operations, while delivering timely and accurate arrival and departure information for Caltrain passengers.
“ARINC is extremely pleased to be awarded this important contract from the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board,” stated Dave Morrissey, ARINC Vice President, Surface Transportation. “We are proud to include Caltrain as one of our valued customers.”
ARINC’s new predictive arrival/departure system will use GPS technology to monitor the actual progress of each train and disseminate arrival and departure times based on the
most current information. These predicted times will be displayed at all Caltrain stations that have existing visual message signs, and also will be available on the regional 511.org Web site.
Caltrain carries 36,000 passengers on 90 trains daily, serving 32 commuter stations along the 77-mile corridor between San Francisco and Gilroy, CA. Twelve of the stations are served by Caltrain’s “Baby Bullet” express service.
ARINC is the leading provider of passenger rail control systems in North America. The company has designed and built more than 27 rail operations control systems for transit authorities, including the Centralized Electrification and Traffic Control system for Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor Operations. Other customers include the Los Angeles MTA, Boston MBTA, the Long Island Rail Road, New York City Transit, New Jersey Transit, CONRAIL, SEPTA, Maryland MTA, and WMATA.
ARINC Incorporated, a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, provides communications, engineering and integration solutions for commercial, defense and government customers worldwide.
