ARINC's vMUSETM Achieves CUPPS Platform Certification; First System Was Piloted at Las Vegas McCarran

November 16, 2009

Annapolis, Maryland—Airlines and airports around the world can now enjoy a new level of operating economy and full interoperability by adopting the industry’s next generation of check-in technology, known as CUPPS—the first recommended practice shared among the industry groups of IATA, ATA and ACI.

ARINC Incorporated today announced its vMUSETM passenger system has qualified as a CUPPS Certified Platform, following rigorous testing by an independent third party and a successful pilot program at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.

“All industry stakeholders can now anticipate a cost-effective migration to the benefits of CUPPS passenger technology,” said Keith Margerison, ARINC Vice President. “Extensive testing has proved that CUPPS works, and the cost savings will now rapidly drive the market.” The final CUPPS (Common-Use Passenger Processing System) standard was released Nov. 15.

ARINC has been a leader in working with the global CUPPS team of IATA, ATA, and ACI. The team is led by Samuel Ingalls, Assistant Director of Aviation, Information Systems, at Las Vegas McCarran.

“November 15 saw the culmination of many years’ work to develop and deploy a passenger check-in “platform of the future” replacing the older CUTE standard,” stated
Ingalls. “We are very pleased to have deployed CUPPS in Pilot testing, and welcome airlines to enjoy the savings and improvements in functionality that can be achieved with CUPPS.”

ARINC installed vMUSE technology as a CUPPS platform in a live operational environment in cooperation with WestJet at Las Vegas McCarran on January 15, 2009. This Pilot program has now checked in more than 70,000 passengers for WestJet and Continental Airlines, and has handled as many as 20 flights per day, helping to prove different airline check-in applications built to the CUPPS standard can operate on any airport’s CUPPS platform.

CUPPS is the first airline passenger processing system to undergo such demanding technical compliance testing and field verification. Software developers at all airlines will now have a universal standard detailed enough to eliminate the variations that previously made interoperability next to impossible to achieve.

Ingalls added “CUPPS has been a tremendous success as a global collaborative development project, bringing together all stakeholders, including airports, airlines, equipment manufacturers, and platform suppliers. This is the first joint publication of an industry Recommended Practice by IATA, ATA, and ACI, and it paves the way for future joint standards.”

To qualify vMUSE as a CUPPS Certified Platform, ARINC had to prove 100% compliance with the exhaustive CUPPS Technical Specification, perform integration of multiple airline check-in applications, and complete a live Beta test at Las Vegas McCarran to verify error-free operation.

ARINC engaged MindTree Ltd, a global IT solutions company, as its independent Compliance Testing Entity for the CUPPS certification program. MindTree Vice President, Travel & Transportation, Siva Vajjhala said, "We are very pleased to have
offered our expertise as a CUPPS CTE to ARINC. The new CUPPS standard and independent compliance testing will make it easy for airlines to enjoy application portability.”

Common-use technology allows multiple airlines to share the same computer systems at airport check-in desks and boarding gates, for large cost savings. The previous generation of common-use—known as CUTE—lacked the detailed technical specifications found in CUPPS which assure interoperability and portability.

ARINC is recognized as a leading innovator in air travel passenger technologies. Its MUSETM family of passenger systems is found at more than 100 airports worldwide, and is used by 300 airlines carrying more than 300 million passengers a year.
