ARINC to Unveil Game-Changing Technologies for Asset Tracking and Logistics at NDTA
September 14, 2009
Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated will showcase several ground-breaking technologies for global asset tracking, logistics management, and secure communications at the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) Forum, September 19-23 in Nashville, Tennessee.
ARINC will provide details of its mesh network-based NGWC global asset monitoring, identification, security, and tracking system. Developed by ARINC and its partner Impeva Labs, the NGWC system successfully monitored and tracked hundreds of tons of vehicles and other DoD assets during ocean shipment and offloading in JLOTS 2009.
Self-powered NGWC transponders sent real-time GPS position and other sensor data through nearby transponders (within hundreds of meters) in a mesh network to both mobile and fixed gateways, greatly reducing the need for costly fixed infrastructure interrogators and greatly increasing asset visibility over many square miles.
During the JLOTS exercise, sensor, security, and location data received by the NGWC servers was automatically shared with the existing AIS databases such as RF ITV, ICODES, and BCS3. The JLOTS test was under a U.S. Army Logistics Innovation Agency (LIA) contract focused on new solutions for Logistics Applications. Remote JLOTS observers achieved continuous in-transit visibility of individual pallets, containers, and vehicles.
“JLOTS clearly demonstrated the viability of this system to manage assets throughout the supply chain, rather than only at discrete entry or exit points, and in forward-reaching military operations where there is no existing fixed infrastructure,” said Monty Montero, ARINC Vice President, Defense Systems Engineering. “The global in-transit asset visibility made possible by NGWC solves many military logistics problems and provides better support for the warfighter.”
ARINC and Impeva Labs now offer their NGWC solution for commercial applications as the Asset AssureSM global tracking solution.
Also on demonstration at NDTA will be a suite of ARINC logistics management tools developed by the company’s Huntsville, Alabama operations for the DoD. These advanced inventory management and tracking solutions reduce errors in the management of weapons, clothing, equipment, tools, and records. They incorporate Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) and Unique Identification (UID) capability, as mandated by the DoD, to enhance visibility and streamline day-to-day military supply and maintenance operations.
ARINC will also unveil its new ACARS® Message Security communications service, Protected ACARSTM, originally developed for the DoD. Based on ARINC’s world standard ACARS aviation data link, Protected ACARS adds a layer of encryption to block unauthorized translation of intercepted messages. Protected ACARS provides end-to-end message protection, data confidentiality and integrity, authentication, and protection for Air Traffic Services. It is now offered globally and recommended for sensitive commercial communications as well as military applications.
