Nuremberg Airport Renews Contract with ARINC, Schedules Baggage Technology Upgrade
May 12, 2009
Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated has won a 3-year extension of its passenger technology contract with long-time customer Nuremberg Airport of Germany. The contract extension was awarded in late April.
ARINC will upgrade the Nuremberg Airport baggage information system, using its exclusive BagLinkTM technology to provide enhanced BPM (Baggage Processed Message) capability. The technology enhancement is scheduled to be completed by June.
In a first among European airports, the new baggage information system at Nuremberg will run on advanced “virtual server” technology. This reduces the need for separate and costly hardware gateways for each airline host connection.
Under its contract, ARINC will also configure the core computer system at Nuremberg to accommodate additional remote passenger check-in stations at the Blue Danube Airport in Linz, Austria, some 200 miles southeast. Linz airport is equipped with ARINC’s economical iMUSE ExpressTM remote check-in technology, and operates as a remote site connected to Nuremberg’s computer infrastructure under a technology agreement.
“ARINC submitted an excellent proposal for our baggage messaging needs which will enable us to offer customer airlines more information, including BPM data,” stated Tobias Seidel, Manager DCS and CUTE System, Airport Nuremberg. “We are happy to continue working with ARINC, as they have provided us with high quality service for almost 10 years.”
Airlines today are increasingly focused on efficient baggage management as well as baggage security. A relatively new development, the BPM is sent when a bag is actually placed on board a flight. This provides a higher level of system awareness than the traditional BSM (Baggage Source Message) which only records when the bag is checked into the airport.
“ARINC is very pleased to introduce our virtual server technology to European airports with this deployment for a good customer, Nuremberg Airport,” said Tony Chapman, Senior Program Director, ARINC European Operations. “With this upgrade, Nuremberg will step ahead of most of the industry with its ability to deliver the operational data airlines want.”
Nuremberg Airport ranks tenth in size among Germany’s airports and is a hub for Air Berlin, the country’s second largest airline. Nuremberg Airport handles more than 4 million passengers a year and serves 15 scheduled and 9 seasonal carriers. It is located only 5 miles from downtown Nuremburg, one of Bavaria’s most popular cities for tourism. For more information, visit the web site at www.airport-nuernberg.de.
