ARINC Radio Unit Delivers Advanced Communications for Spectacular New JetBlue Terminal 5 at JFK

January 28, 2009

Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated has delivered an integrated radio and dispatch system to support the expanded ground operations of JetBlue Airways at its recently completed JetBlue Terminal 5 at New York’s JFK International Airport.

ARINC’s cutting-edge radio and dispatch console system replaces older technology and provides two-way radio coverage throughout the new Terminal 5 complex, while making use of JetBlue’s existing frequencies. It was accepted by JetBlue’s evaluation team in December, and the installation by ARINC’s Radio Technology Solutions business unit drew praise from JetBlue.

“Terminal 5 was designed to make the JetBlue customer experience as efficient and comfortable as possible,” stated Marisa Von Wieding, JetBlue Director of Operations, JFK. “We are very pleased with the advanced solution ARINC has provided us.”

“ARINC is excited to play a part in JetBlue’s growth and success, and to deliver a true state-of-the art communications system for their expanded ground operations at JFK,” stated Mary Anne Mancillas, ARINC Director of Radio Technology Solutions. “Like its TWA Terminal predecessor, JetBlue Terminal 5 is a landmark in terminal design that will be studied and emulated for years to come.”

Already regarded as an industry milestone, JetBlue Terminal 5 covers more than 15 acres, with 40 ticket counters on 3 concourses and 26 departure gates. A 55,000 square foot central marketplace forms a hub, where a 20-lane security checkpoint—the largest single checkpoint in the U.S.—eliminates bottlenecks with efficient, customer-friendly lanes for families, casual travelers, and expert jetters. Terminal 5 completely replaces the operations of JetBlue previously conducted from JFK Terminal 6, and will eventually offer additional passenger access through the renovated TWA Terminal.

The equipment installed at Terminal 5 by ARINC Radio Technology Solutions and its partners Avtec Systems and Kenwood includes a 5-channel UHF Trunking system and six VHF-AM radios and antenna systems to fully support air-ground flight operations. A 24-position dispatch console system was integrated with the VHF air-ground radios and UHF ground-ground radio system. The console system is a multi-line, multi-operator design that allows a number of console dispatchers to access each other as well as any of the radio and telephone circuits connected to the system.

New York-based JetBlue Airways has created a new airline category based on value, service and style. Known for its award-winning service, free TV, and low fares, JetBlue now offers Lots of Legroom and super-spacious Even More Legroom seats. JetBlue pioneered complimentary in-flight e-mail, instant messaging, and the Customer Bill of Rights. With JetBlue, all seats are assigned, all travel is ticketless, all fares are one-way, and an overnight stay is never required. For more information, visit www.jetblue.com.
