ARINC to Install First Common-Use Check-In Technology at Detroit Metropolitan Airport

Annapolis, Maryland—In competitive bidding, ARINC Incorporated has been awarded a technology contract valued at over $1 million to install state-of-the-art check-in capability for the North Terminal Redevelopment (NTR) Project at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

ARINC will install its industry-leading i MUSE^TM common-use check-in and boarding system for use by participating airlines. The i MUSE system increases operating efficiency and reduces costs by permitting multiple airlines to share an advanced set of check-in and boarding equipment. The North Terminal Redevelopment Project is a 26-gate terminal complex designed to replace two older terminals when it opens in September 2008.

“We evaluated three competitive common-use proposals, and ARINC’s solution was the most responsive to our needs, as well as the most economical,” stated Tom McCarthy, Deputy Director, Wayne County Airport Authority. “We are looking forward to offering the efficiency of common-use check-in and boarding for our customer airlines.”

ARINC will install i MUSE common-use workstations for more than 35 check-in counter locations and 9 boarding gates, as well as a supporting local area network. The ARINC iMUSE system will be used by all North Terminal airlines that do not bring their own dedicated check-in technology. ARINC’s contract is with Detroit-based Ferndale Electric, special systems contractor for the NTR project.

When completed, the North Terminal complex will accommodate airlines currently operating out of DTW’s aging L.C. Smith and Berry Terminals. The new North Terminal will also have a Federal Inspection Station (FIS) to handle international flights. In addition, a three-level Ground Transportation Center will be constructed adjacent to the terminal to expedite loading and unloading of commercial vehicles.

The Wayne County Airport Authority has recently completed more than $2 billion in airport improvements at DTW, including the new McNamara Terminal. The Authority is now moving forward with its next round of improvements.
