ARINC Wins Major Train Control Contract for San Diego Light Rail OperationsMarch 10, 2008Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated today announced it has won a significant contract to design and install a new centralized train control (CTC) system for the light rail transit operations in greater San Diego, California. The contract was awarded in January by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), for the Metropolitan Transit System Rail Operations of San Diego Trolley Inc. (SDTI). San Diego Trolley operates a regional light rail system from downtown Bayside, northeast to Gillespie Field and Santee Town Center, and south to the Mexican border, providing daytime service at most locations every 15 minutes, 7 days a week. ARINC will implement a new centralized train control system based on its industry-leading Advanced Information Management (AIM®) software platform, with its field-proven set of train control and train tracking applications. The new system will provide SDTI with centralized train control, routing and tracking, and monitoring and control of 51 miles of track, substations, feeders, and overhead catenary. It will also provide acquisition and archiving of data, and will interconnect with current fare collection, CCTV, and fire life safety systems. “ARINC is extremely pleased to receive this important assignment from one of America’s major light-rail systems,” stated Dennis Lengyel, ARINC Vice President, Surface Transportation Systems. “The AIM system’s open architecture with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components is proving its value nationwide by driving down the cost of advanced rail control system design, engineering, installation, and maintenance.” ARINC AIM solutions available today include virtually off-the-shelf functionality for integrated train control, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and security functions. The AIM system is in daily use by many leading transit systems in the United States. The San Diego Trolley light rail transit system serves 100,000 passengers daily with a fleet of 134 electrically powered light rail vehicles (LRVs) on 50 miles of double-tracked main routes.
