ARINC Reports a Surge of Interest in Iridium During 3rd Quarter 2007

November 6, 2007

Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC Incorporated this month observed the first anniversary of the launch of its GLOBALink/Iridium voice and data communications services. The company reports a sharp recent increase in the demand for its Iridium services by airlines worldwide, and a similar jump in the volume of its monthly Iridium traffic.

ARINC said its list of Iridium customers grew nearly 40% between June and September of 2007, while its Iridium data link message totals increased 26% and Iridium telephony usage shot up 46%.

“With low avionics costs and global coverage, we anticipated airlines and aircraft operators worldwide would recognize the value of Iridium and adopt it for operational use,” said Peter Grogan, Director, ARINC Aviation Solutions. “But the current level of interest and growth in our GLOBALink/Iridium customer base has exceeded any initial expectations.”

Grogan continued, “Many users were attracted to Iridium due to the low equipment costs and reliable global coverage. We now find that current Iridium users are migrating to ARINC’s GLOBALink/Iridium services from alternate service providers. They are attracted by our standards-compliant ACARS messaging solution, and message delivery via ARINC’s robust AviNet private network. This combination is measurably more reliable and secure than offerings from other service providers who depend on proprietary platforms and the Internet for message delivery.”

By contrast, ARINC’s Iridium service leverages the proven infrastructure of its private GLOBALink network, which has been used for mission-critical communications by the airlines for decades. ARINC has deliberately engineered its GLOBALink/Iridium services to meet stringent requirements for air traffic safety services use, which is anticipated in the near future.

Cathay Pacific became the first airline to adopt ARINC’s GLOBALink/Iridium service in September 2006. ARINC has seen rapid expansion since that service launch, and is now supporting airlines and OEMs around the globe.

ARINC Incorporated, a portfolio company of The Carlyle Group, provides communications, engineering and integration solutions for commercial, defense and government customers worldwide.  Headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland with regional offices in London and Singapore, ARINC is ISO 9001:2000 certified.
