DoD Is Looking for a Few Good Veteran Manufacturers—at Maryland Industry Day

September 20 , 2007

Annapolis, Maryland—Veterans who operate small manufacturing businesses or support manufacturing processes will have a unique chance to learn about new business opportunities with the Department of Defense on Wednesday, October 17, in Annapolis. The event—the first Greater Maryland Region Industry Day for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned & Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB)—will take place at the headquarters of ARINC Incorporated.

Maryland 3rd District Congressman John P. Sarbanes will kick off the event, which is designed to help small manufacturers learn the ABC’s of Government contracting, with a special emphasis on the DoD. Attendees will have a unique opportunity to come face-to-face with representatives from several nearby DoD small business program offices.

The Defense Sustainment Consortium (http://dsc.defsus.org), whose mission is to support aging weapon systems, will co-host the event through its National Data Integration and Test Center at ARINC. The DSC will outline the latest initiatives on identifying and helping SDVOSBs and VOSBs gain greater opportunities to help solve DoD backorders. There is a critical need for spare manufactured parts, and the October 17 session will be focused on metalworking manufacturing and related industries, such as welding, machining, casting, heat-treating, and more. The event is open to Veteran-Owned Manufacturers and Manufacturing-related companies from the greater Maryland region.

Attendees will learn about the many DoD programs in need of manufacturing sources, and will have a chance to sign up with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Center for Veterans Enterprise (CVE) database of manufacturers. Limited on-site registration will begin at 7:00 a.m., but due to limited space, pre-registration is recommended at www.arinc.com/sdvosb. A $10 registration fee will be collected at the door.

“Our Veteran-Owned firms in the region do outstanding work and can be a tremendous asset to our federal sector. This forum gives these businesses an excellent opportunity to identify areas where they can work with the wide array of Department of Defense programs located throughout Maryland and the surrounding area,” said Rep. Sarbanes. “We look forward to some very useful networking and information sharing.”

The U.S. Veterans Administration and the Small Business Offices of several area Military installations and Small Business DC Headquarters will give presentations and provide information booths to help Veteran-Owned companies learn about DoD opportunities.

Speakers will represent the U.S. Veterans Affairs Center for Veterans Enterprise, the U.S. Air Force Small Business Office, the Defense Logistics Agency, and the Defense Sustainment Consortium. An overview of the National Data Integration and Test Center (NDITC) located at ARINC will be given by Program Director Walter Tomczykowski. ARINC maintains the NDITC for the Defense Logistics Agency and the DSC.
