ARINC DirectSM Launches New Data Link Service over Iridium Satellite

October 16, 2006

Annapolis, Maryland—ARINC DirectSM today announced a low-cost satellite communications solution that puts worldwide two-way satellite data link communication service within reach of virtually all business jet operators. The solution is based on the Iridium global satellite constellation, using avionics hardware from International Communications Group (ICG) of Newport News, VA.

“With a small hardware footprint and attractive price point—50% to 70% lower than other two-way satellite systems—our ARINC Direct offering meets the global coverage needs of business aircraft operators,” stated Steve Means, ARINC Vice President, Aviation Solutions.

The ARINC Direct Iridium system is currently interoperable with Collins CMU 4000TM/Proline 21TM and Honeywell AFISTM avionics. Interoperability with other systems is expected later in the year. “ARINC Direct customers can now cost-effectively extend their data link communications coverage and seamlessly receive their ARINC Direct content from anywhere in the world,” stated Means. “ARINC is the world’s largest provider of aeronautical data link services, and adding Iridium is the perfect complement to our existing commercial VHF, HF, and Inmarsat data link offerings.”

ICG’s Iridium hardware includes a compact avionics box and lightweight, low-drag antenna similar to ICG systems now available as standard equipment on Bombardier aircraft. Armin Jabs, President of ICG, stated, “Our Iridium hardware is a plug-and-play solution that works with existing avionics, eliminating the need for additional equipment or software. It is also a direct replacement for the aging Aero-C satellite equipment found on many aircraft.”

The Iridium satellite constellation offers broader global coverage than Inmarsat SATCOM, and with ARINC Direct proprietary technology, message delivery times are comparable to VHF message delivery times. Due to the low cost of equipment, ARINC expects the new service to win over business jet operators who currently have no satellite data link communication services.

ICG and ARINC demonstrated ACARS®-compliant, Iridium-based messaging in March 2006, with text messages, graphical weather, and flight plans—the first providers to seamlessly integrate Iridium-based ACARS communications in a service offering.
