ARINC Introduces Groundbreaking XML Messaging Service, Predicts Savings for Air Transport IndustryOctober 12, 2006Annapolis, MarylandARINC Incorporated today introduced AviNet® eXchange, a new business-class messaging service. The innovative service takes advantage of the latest IP technologies including XML and Web Services, while maintaining backward compatibility with the air transport industry’s legacy and proprietary messaging methods. “AviNet eXchange provides a bridge between legacy industry messaging mechanisms and today’s efficient IP business applications,” said Mike McShea, ARINC Senior Director of Global Product Management, Network Solutions. “Early industry adopters of Web Services and XML-based applications can now migrate their own applications even if their trading partners are not ready. This will vastly lower the cost of business-to-business integration for individual customers and across the industry.” The requirements for security and guaranteed message delivery have made it difficult for the air transport industry to move from legacy systems to Open Standards. Recent initiatives such as e-Ticketing, e-Freight, and expanded Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) data reporting have accelerated the growth of applications using modern interface protocols, as well as the need for evolution to more extensible and flexible approaches to data exchange. “Through AviNet eXchange, ARINC is enabling the air transport industry to take full advantage of modern technologies for business-to-business communications while maintaining the levels of reliability and security required for transmission of mission-critical, safety-of-life, and sensitive data,” continued McShea. AviNet eXchange allows XML-formatted messages to be sent securely between partners using Web Services. With ARINC’s service, an airline can send a SOAP-compliant XML message to a trading partner with levels of reliability not previously available using Open Standards. AviNet eXchange also allows XML messaging through commonly used middleware connections such as WebSphere MQ, and allows communications with applications using proprietary legacy protocols such as IATA Type B messaging. The new service includes support for several elements of the initial Type X Messaging Specification just released by the Type X Industry Work Group that ARINC co-founded. “Our introduction of AviNet eXchange is consistent with ARINC’s tradition of innovation. It will be instrumental in building momentum toward the next generation of industry communications capabilities,” stated Ruth Hough, ARINC Vice President, Network Solutions. “By adopting Web Services and XML messaging with ARINC as a partner, the industry can make the transition it requires without sacrificing the high availability, reliability, and security our messaging customers have come to depend on to support their most critical operations.” ARINC Incorporated is the world leader in transportation communications and systems engineering.
