Push-to-Talk Digital Phone Service from ARINC

Annapolis, MarylandBusinesses that depend on 2-way radio in the Raleigh, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC area will soon have a better communications option. Skitronics, LLC, a leading 2-way radio provider in the region, will soon offer a full-featured digital telephone service for commercial radio users.
The new digital phone service—named “Big Dog Wireless”—will be launched in early July, and ARINC Incorporated will support the system with digital switch infrastructure using an ARINC-owned and operated Harmony Wireless Communication System.
“Hundreds of radio customers in this area have been asking us for digital service,” states Skitronics President John Komorowski. “The Big Dog Wireless solution will deliver all the features they need—including simple, one-to-many dispatch calling. And unlike the giant telephone providers, we are pricing Big Dog Wireless digital service at a flat rate.”
The new Big Dog service is based on the same proven Motorola iDEN™ hardware used by national telephone service providers. Users will get clearer voice quality than from standard 2-way radios, and a full-service digital phone is part of the same handset. Big Dog also plans to offer customers mobile data services over the iDEN system.
“Our Big Dog Wireless offering will be very attractive for small and medium size businesses, and for institutions such as colleges and government agencies,” says Komorowski.
ARINC and Skitronics have finished testing the first of twelve digital transmitters to be installed from Raleigh to Myrtle Beach. The ARINC digital technology behind Big Dog service is not new—ARINC offers an iDEN phone network serving North American airport operations, and its reliable service is used by airports coast to coast.
Digital switch sharing—as provided by ARINC for Big Dog—presents a profitable solution for regional radio operators who want to upgrade their service offerings from analog to digital, without the high cost of owning and operating a digital switch.
“Skitronics will enjoy a great competitive advantage by offering iDEN digital technology backed by ARINC's mission-critical communications and technical operations expertise,” states Ruth Hough, ARINC Vice President, Network Solutions. “Other spectrum owners should strongly consider taking advantage of this same opportunity.”
Founded in 1994, Skitronics, LLC has grown to become the largest 2-way radio service provider in the Raleigh-Myrtle Beach area. With four service locations, Skitronics provides economical wide area dispatch services in more than 27 markets. More information can be requested by contacting skitronicsradio@aol.com.
