ARINC Sponsors Arlington Cyclists on 2006 Police Unity Bike Tour

May 10, 2006

Annapolis, Maryland—The Jefferson Memorial grounds will be filled with a hearty welcome on Friday afternoon for a thousand cyclists taking part in this year’s Police Unity Bike Tour. Drawn from police departments across the country, this year’s participants will finish a 4-day ride covering several states at the memorial, and enjoy much-needed cool refreshments provided by ARINC Incorporated.

The Police Unity Tour is an annual event to raise public awareness for the National Law Enforcement Memorial, built in 1984 in Washington, D.C. Since the Tour was first organized in 1997 it has become the principal fund-raiser for the Memorial. Over the last nine years the Tour has raised some $2.2 million, and each cyclist this year is expected to bring in $1500 or more in donations from sponsors.

ARINC this year is sponsoring Bethany LeFrancois, Marc Mazzella, Tom Jessup, and John Donaggio of the Arlington County Police Department.  Officer LeFrancois worked with ARINC during the integration of a broad-based mobile wireless data network that enables hundreds of computer-equipped police and vehicles to send and receive critical information as they go about their work.

“ARINC recognizes the critical role played by the women and men of our police departments who protect our communities. We are increasingly involved with law enforcement in our growing role supporting police and public safety communications. We are pleased to sponsor officers of the Arlington County Police Department again this year, and to honor the other participants with a contribution to their consolidated effort,” said Beth Leek, Technical Operations Director, ARINC Public and Enterprise Solutions.

On last year’s Police Unity Tour, more than 700 participants—bikers, Memorial associates, and others—raised some $750,000. The total this year is expected to be similar or higher.

The Police Unity Tour has taken on greater meaning since the events of September 2001, and the 5-state Tour now passes by Ground Zero in New York City. This year’s Tour started May 9 in Florham Park, NJ. For more information on the Police Unity Tour, visit the web site at www.policeunitytour.com.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial and its nearby Visitors Center were established and are managed by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Inc., a private nonprofit organization formed in 1984 for the purpose of honoring the service and sacrifice of America's police officers. The Memorial is located on E Street NW, between 4th and 5th Streets in Washington, D.C. The Memorial is open 24 hours a day, year-round. Street parking is available close to the Memorial.
