ARINC Installs New iMUSETM Passenger System at Portland International Airport, OregonMarch 23, 2006Annapolis, MarylandARINC Incorporated is installing its industry-leading iMUSETM common-use passenger check-in and boarding technology for Portland International Airport (PDX), Oregon, a major gateway to the U.S. northwest. The ARINC iMUSE system has been deployed at selected ticket counters and boarding gates under a 2005 contract awarded by the Port of Portland. Equipment installation began in December and is scheduled for completion soon. Availability of common-use technology provides airlines the option to share terminal resources—including common hardware and software systems—and reduce costs. “This shared-design system will enable airlines interested in the common-use system to significantly reduce costs associated with leasing equipment, ticket-counter and back office space, at a time when the industry is hard-pressed to save money,” stated Chris Madsen, the general manager of business and properties at Portland International. “Common-use will also provide us with maximum flexibility to accommodate carriers as they grow, reducing the need to build additional airport facilities.” Two of Portland’s scheduled international airlines have been using the new ARINC check-in system since January, and others are expected to follow later in the year. To provide ongoing maintenance and support for the new passenger system, Portland International has contracted with ARINC Managed Services (AMS), a wholly-owned ARINC subsidiary, to provide on-site and on-call support. “Through a competitive bidding process, we selected ARINC’s iMUSE system which also includes the availability of ARINC Managed Services,” said Linda Dyson, Sr. Manager Aviation Information Technology. “It means we will get single-source responsibility for both the technology and the maintenance, and this will complement the customer support provided by own technical staff for other airport systems.” “Portland International is a great example of a forward-thinking airport that will benefit from adopting common-use while still on the growth curve,” stated Mike Picco, ARINC Vice President, Airport Systems. “Common-use systems were designed originally for the world’s largest airports, but the technology has now matured. The benefits of common use are now economically attractive to airports of all sizes.” Portland International Airport serves nearly 14 million passengers a year, with hundreds of scheduled daily flights. The airport has recently renovated its business conference center, added convenient new parking, and opened a new passenger concourse connector. Its goal of providing outstanding customer service includes shops that remain open 365 days a year, and courtesy jump-starts and free flat tire assistance in the parking area.
